Sometimes after an animal dies, people will say:
“You can always get another one.”
But another animal is another relationship.
You can absolutely love the animal who comes next, maybe just as deeply, but they’re not a replacement for the one who died.
We don’t expect one human relationship to replace another one, and I don’t think we should expect that from our relationships with animals either.
